The Rhodopi Mountains: Trigrad gorge and the Devil's throat cave






Some pictures from our trip along Trigrad Gorge, a steep canyon of marble rocks whose main end destination is the Devil's throat cave. It is said that Orpheus went into the underworld at this entrance to bring back his beloved Euridica. For us, it was more spectacular that a bagpipe player sent his haunting Rhodopian melodies into the earth where they echoed and echoed in the vast chambers, mixing with the roar of the giant waterfalls. Also, the fact that the largest colony of cave long-wing bats in all of the Balkans lives here is pretty neat. We only saw a few of them though... The Trigrad gorge and river area are really, really impressive! I think the canyon sides are about 350 meters high...
