The Rhodopi Mountains: On toward Dospat

Our drive from Stoikite to Dospat was very rainy. It began nice and cool but then soon turned into torrential downpour. Not so bad except that our defrost in the car didn't work so we couldn't see anything at all. We had to hole up in a tiny little cafe in Dospat for an hour to let the rain pass over us. Luckily, it wasn't heading the way we were intending to go. Here are a few pictures before and after the rain. The city, Dospat, is built over a long hill right next to a large resevoir. It is surrounded by forest, mostly Scots pine, and is a very popular place for hunting, fishing, trekking, and plant gathering. All the other pictures (like the potato fields and bridge) are on the road coming west into town. I actually had an invitation to study with a wonderful singer in Dospat, Savka Sarieva, sister to Rumen Rhodopski, but unfortunately, I could never reach her!
